Week 3: Hermagora's Approach #1

One of my possible research topics was the contemporary depiction or discussion of the ideal in art and literature.  I began by examining this topic through each of the four stasies.  The question of conjecture I came upon was, "Is the concept of the ideal discussed in contemporary literature?"  The prior question can be simply answered yes or no. This sort of response lacked the depth I am looking for.  My question of definition was, "What is the modern reaction to the ideal in literature?"  This option seemed much more valid for our research paper.  I could research and include contemporary texts which discuss, directly and indirectly, the ideal and its relationship to the human condition.  A further exploration of quality, "Is the modern conception of the ideal correct? accurate?" seemed to reach too far into subjective response and away from research-able information.  The final stasis through which I could interpret this topic was comical in the magnitude of its undertaking, "How can we more aptly respond to the ideal and its existence or lackthereof in contemporary literature?"  While I would much like to respond to this final question, it seems a bit too complex for a 5-7 page response.

I was greatly surprised by how effective this process of analysis was.  As I worked and struggled to create questions pertaining to my topic within each stasis, I was able to determine which levels of questioning could lead to the result I was looking for.  Each stasis gives the opportunity for a different sort of response, and each possess's the possibility for varying lengths and depths of writing.
