Week 11: Reading Response

As a student of English, I can saw with much certainty that nearly every idea described in these articles was new to me.  While many of the observations reflect a natural reaction and understanding of the way visual stimuli are interpreted by the human psyche, I have never studied these concepts in an academic environment.  I was intrigued by the depth and variety of vocabulary pertaining to this realm of discourse.  I was particularly interested in the Dondis article.  Many of the concepts presented, like Dondis's discussion of representation and symbolism, are directly or indirectly connected to the concerns of Literary discourse.  I discovered another example of this overlapping of discourse as I read through the Molly Bang article.  As she was describing the, "symbolism of color" I couldn't help but notice that she was describing color archetypes.
I see visual composition, like written composition, as a gestalt entity.  It is created through the complex interaction of a series of visual/psychological techniques and mechanics that can be identified and manipulated.  The results of which are never fully described through an understanding of each individual part. Just as written composition depends on grammar, style, arrangement, sentence composition, and many other things that when combined create a piece of writing, visual composition operates in a similar manner.
While I do not fully understand what I am trying to create, and thus cannot make many concrete decisions as to what I will use from these readings, I will say that I hope to use the perspective developed through an acknowledgement of the ideas in these writings as a tool in creating an effective visual composition.  I hope to use the principles described in each reading to develop a poster that evokes the response from the viewer that I originally intended in my creation.
